Making of "Sunrise of the 80's" - 3dsmaxSoftware:Autodesk 3ds MaxAuthor:Marek DenkoContact:marek.denko@gmail.comAuthor Website:http://www.marekdenko.net/IntroductionI had several free weeks before me so I decided to do a new personal project. I started playing with ideas, but I wasn't sure what it was going to be. I started with a night street scene with phone booth and snow on the road. I was playing with it and at the end, it became a sunrise scene which 'smelt' of the Eastern Europe that I fondly recall from my childhood.. ![]() [Click Here for larger image] ReferencesFor me personally, references are one of the most important parts when I'm creating my images. Usually I spend several hours searching through the internet and in my photo library trying to find the best references. Very often I just go outside to take new pictures if needed. You should never underestimate this aspect of work. Within your references, you can find a lot of interesting things and details which are very hard to realize if you don't see them directly. They are very helpful for modeling, texturing and shading. I will probably use this sentence in all of my "making of" and I'll never stop doing it. References are essential to my work. Since I'm a member of www.environment-textures.com, my references are primarily from this site. Stuff there are also perfect to be used as textures. ![]() [Click Here for larger image] ModelingI must admit that modeling this scene was more or less like routine. All the models are editable polygons which is really easy to learn and understand. You can read about it in manual of your 3D package. One interesting thing that I'll explain is how I did the asphalt modeling. I decided to use the classic old Displace modifier of 3ds Max in order to save rendertime, so I started to play with it and the results were promising. This time I did it without Vray displacement, which is still really great regardless. It is a really boring process so I'm always using basic projection of textures like planar, box, or cylindrical. For texturing I used textures from my personal library, pictures I took, as well as a lot of textures from www.environment-textures.com. This is the biggest environment textures and references library I know of. I also used a lot of dirt textures from 3dtotal textures. They are one of my most used textures in both my personal and professional work. For asphalt diffuse, I used 10Mpx textures/pictures I took especially for this case. For cracks, I used displace maps both procedural and bitmaps as shown in the modeling. For shading I used mainly VrayMtl shader for almost everything. For snow I used VrayBlendMtl shader which allows you to composite materials faster then standard composite in 3ds Max. So there is a completely opaque material, ice material and snow material. They are composed/blended over with two maps which are combinations of procedural maps and bitmaps. Snow/Ice/Opaque Material![]() [Click Here for larger image] For the appartment windows, I did Multi/Sub-object material with 66 IDs in total. At first I cut out all the windows from references and appartment photos I had and then I did the material. Since I'm not a very good scripter, it cost me 10 minutes of handy work :o). Then I just applied this material to the windows mesh with Material by Element modifier, which is randomly distributing IDs on geometry elements. ![]() [Click Here for larger image] Lighting and RenderingFor rendering, I used V-ray 1.5. I'm really satisfied with this render engine. For lighting this scene, I used one yellowish directional light as sun and bluish V-ray dome light for skylight. I didn't used global illumination bounces for lighting. I worked on an Inspiron 9400 Laptop from Dell, but in the end, the final rendering was done on 3 PCs with 4 Gb of ram. I'd like to say thank you to Jan Rybar, who supported me with this rendering power. Rendering took about 15 hours at 3500x1968 pixels resolution. I agree that the rendertime is too high for this kind of scene and there are many possibilities to optimize it. Anyway when this possibility of rendering on those machines presented itself, I didn't waste time optimizing it and I set up the adaptive sampler for anti aliasing to 1,3 in V-ray. I also rendered two additional passes. First was caustics layer and second one was speculars from the car front lights. PostproductionFor postproduction, I used Fusion 5.1. It is great compositing software and I really like to work in it. On the pictures below you can see the short and simple flow from Fusion and the layers I rendered separately to have better control in the final image. Caustics and speculars are just screened over the color pass with some opacity values. At the end I used color corrections. | nice job man, most of the objects 're simple 3D objects but i don't understand how you made the snow, it seems like you actualy "moddeld" it?? anyway, good job man! |
nicepiece of craft but is it possible without vray
You are extremely cool from your ski.
vrey good sar
Where is small house models exist hutch_amit@yahoo.co.in
Man i also belongs 2 animation industry from past 8 years I v seen a lots of creative work by many of them but i m telling you from the bottom of my heart this one is the best work i v ever seen you did a grat one and belive me You are one of the best artist we have TWO THUMBS UP GOOD LUCK !!!
