Simple Method of Creating a Diamond in 3DSoftware Used: Autodesk MayaAuthor: DongContact: yangdongmy@gmail.comIntroductionThis tutorial explains the process of creating a diamond model in 3d. The software used is Maya. But you can use any 3d applications to follow the steps. Step 1: Import the reference drawing as a image plane on the top viewport. This reference included in the scene file download. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 2: Create a Polygon primitive Cone. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 3: Move and Scale the cone to fit the drawing. And make the cone's "Subdivisions Axis" to 16. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 4: Move the cone done alone the Y axis until the drawing covers the cone like the picture shows. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 5: Go to: Edit Mesh > Split Polygon Tool. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 6: Split the top polygon face according to the drawing. Use "Y" key to repeat the command. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 7: Select the vertices showed in the picture and scale them outwards to fit them to the drawing. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 9: Select only the vertices showing in the picture and move them upwards. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 10: Go to the side view and mode the bottom vertex up. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 11: Go to Object Mode and select the diamond object. And Go to: Edt Mesh > Cut Faces Tool (Option). The second picture shows the option for the Cut Faces Tool. The 3rd and 4th pictures show the cut made by Cut Faces Tool. [Click Here for Larger Image] [Click Here for Larger Image] [Click Here for Larger Image] [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 12: Use Split Polygon Tool again to cut the faces all around. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 13: Delete the bottom edges all around. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 14: According to the drawing, delete the edges showed in the 2nd picture. [Click Here for Larger Image] [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 15: Select one of the vertex and use: Edit Mesh > Chamfer Vertex, set Width to "0.15" or an appropriate number suits you. [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 16: The Chamfer Vertex command will open up the vertex. As you can see, the opened area is not 4 sided face. So select the two vertices showed in the 2nd picture and scale them to move them closer and use Edit Mesh > Merge to merge two vertices together. [Click Here for Larger Image] [Click Here for Larger Image](Result of Merging Two Vertices:) [Click Here for Larger Image]Step 17: Go around and use the same process to open up all the vertices to make them a 4 sided face. | hey can u tell me how did u splited |
Its really good
hey can u tell me how to use the split polygon tool please
can anyone tell me about texturing part of d diamonds .
say something about the rendering part otherwise my model is no good...please!
I have problems with the last chamfer steps. One of my edges looks like it should. But all the others are different. I uploaded 2 screenshots: http://picpaste.de/DiamondWrong1.png http://picpaste.de/DiamondWrong2.png The one corner that looks as good as in the tutorial is strange. The control point for the face is hidden on the other side (inside the diamond). But the normal of the face is outside. The "bad" corners are not looking nice. But they are looking the way I would expect from them (taking the edges into account). And I can see the face control point outside. What makes them different?
Hi MrEpso^de, I used 3dsmax to render the diamond. I am working on the Maya version of rendering settings now. Hopefully I will get the maya shading networks soon up online.
Thanks Pixer. If you are just starting using maya, you will want to learn modeling first. This simple tutorial will help you in some ways. You can check out other tutorials in "Basic 3D Tutorials" category as well.
hey, real good tutorial dud! but... i´m starting in maya, so, do you think good if i star by this tutorial?
Would like to know how you set up the render as well as, what ya did with the Hypershader to get the final apperance :D Well formed TUT thanks...
